Aspiring astronomers are always told to study the astronomy star guide before they get to start using the telescopes to peer at the twinkling points of lights in the skies above. They would be told to be able to read these guides, and when they can comprehend the information inside the charts, only then shall they be able to use Telescopes.

The main reason for this is that there are a lot of stars in the sky. Try going to a dark place where there are no city lights and look up. You’ll see a lot more stars there than you would in the city. Now, imagine, how would you know which star to look? Or how could you even know the name of the star you are looking at? Hence, you have to know your stars before you start looking at them. And you can only do that by studying these guides.

Knowledge of the astronomy star guide is also important if you plan to embark on a career as an astronomer. Some new celestial bodies are actually discovered by amateurs and merely verified by professionals. In the movie Deep Impact, it was an amateur who discovered the huge comet. They only found out that it was new when they consulted the guides. The astronomy star guide is used as a main basis to judge whether or not the astronomer has discovered a new body, because a new discovery simply wouldn’t yet be plotted on any of the maps in the astronomy star guide.

So What Is an Astronomy Star Guide?

An astronomy star guide is a publication that serves as reference for amateur astronomers. It contains all the necessary technical information about the stars that will help you in your astronomy, whether you’re doing it for a job or just a hobby.

For example, groups of stars are identified into a specific pattern that astronomers call constellations. There are a total of 88 known constellations that you can find in the evening sky. All these are covered in the astronomy star guide. The guides tell you wonderful and intriguing information about the constellations, not just technical information like location and name of stars. You also get to know the story behind these constellations and the myths associated with them since almost all stars and constellations are named after certain mythical beings like Perseus, Draco, and a lot more.

Of course, information about stars wouldn’t be complete if you don’t see what they look like. These guides come with the needed maps that plot the location of a specific star among the myriad.
[ad#250x250-sq]
The astronomy star guide gives you the confidence and knowledge that you can use to your advantage. Imagine how your friends would react if you were all watching the stars and you could pinpoint exactly which star is which. This knowledge can only be attained by studying the Astronomy star guide.

That’s not the only knowledge you’d get from the astronomy star guide. You’d also get to learn when and where the star you’re looking for would rise into the evening sky. It’s surprisingly simple, and the calculations you need to learn can be found in the astronomy star guide.

The guides also teach you what stars can be found in any given season, since the earth’s rotation and revolution around the sun cause changes to the position of any star in the sky. That’s because maps that show the position of the stars all year around are published in the astronomy star guide.

In a nutshell, an astronomy star guide makes the complicated science of astronomy easier for amateurs and non-professionals to grasp.

Astrologers Also Use the Astronomy Star Guide?

Astronomers are not the only people to hold an interest in the stars. Astrologers do too. Although they may have different aims, astrologers can be considered astronomers. Astrologers just happen to concentrate on the somewhat mythical implications of the stars’ positions, while astronomers prefer to study the empirical or scientific data of the stars.
[ad#468x60]
How do star guides help astrologers? Here’s how: There are 12 signs of the zodiac. These signs are significant to both astrologers and astronomers, in fact. This is because the 12 zodiac signs are actually constellations in the sky. Because of that, astrologers also use the astronomy star guide to follow the different positions of different celestial bodies in order to make their interpretations.

Just when you thought that amateur astronomy only came into existence when Copernicus discovered that the Earth was round or that Haley saw a unique comet, which he named after him, you’ll realize that it was practiced thousands of years ago. The first people on earth already had huge love in amateur astronomy. They observe the stars and the moons to help them decide on the best times for harvest or hunt. Amateur Astronomy formed the different superstitions and beliefs, which are popular until now. A common example is that during full moon, some humans will transform into werewolves.[ad#250x250-sq]The popularity of amateur astronomy isn’t also affected by the scientific revelations that could be imprinted in dozens of journals, books, and magazines. Though the truth is already out there, there are still plenty who would go out, bringing their telescopes and other tools, and then pay attention to the night sky. Sometimes you just want to experience them on your own.

Tools for Amateur Astronomy

Nevertheless, you can never really get into amateur astronomy if you don’t have tools with you. The good thing is they don’t need to be really inexpensive. In fact, if you just know the principles of each equipment, you can just build your own.

An amateur astronomy will always require a telescope, so you can clearly see the minute objects up in the sky. You can go for those with a little higher magnification than the basic ones. However, you can also create your own, using a very powerful magnification lens, which are available in science stores. There are also digital Telescopes now, which can perfectly capture the images of heavenly bodies.

You also need a notebook and a pen, which you can utilize in keeping a log. A person who’s really into his amateur astronomy would surely take note of his observations every time he studies the skies. Who knows you could be discovering a pattern, new astronomical phenomenon, or a star that have not been talked about before? To make it more personal, you can include some of your intimate thoughts.

An amateur astronomy may also need a light filter, so you can directly observe the sun. If you don’t have it, you can greatly damage your eyesight. A star chart is extremely useful too, especially if you want to identify the constellations.
[ad#468x60]
With these simple equipment, you can already begin your amateur astronomy. Just always keep one important thing in thought. You should always have the burning passion to get to know more about the heavenly bodies. This passion will direct you to the right ways and will allow you to appreciate the earth and the universe a lot better.

The astronomy telescopes are the first tools to grace the hands of astronomers even before there were spaceships, rockets, and astronauts to expose and study the universe. Telescopes were instrumental to the discovery of the different heavenly bodies during the time of Galileo and Copernicus. In fact, they are still used to discover new planets, asteroids, and star systems, and even spot-approaching comets.

The astronomy telescopes are used by the astronomer to look into the skies. Literally, they blow up or magnify the image of something that is too far away to see in detail.Low-powered telescopes are simply not up to the task of making the target object big enough to the user’s eyes that it appears like the observer is right next in front of the object.

The first astronomy telescopes used the technique of refraction or focusing light at a specific point. However, such a technique produces a halo that shows the color spectrum, which can be annoying to the eyes. This is due to the glass breaking up light into the seven colors.

To address this, Sir Isaac Newton came up with the technique of reflection in which a mirror and lens operate together to display the same image. Essentially, reflector astronomy telescopes are refractors that have a second mirror to reflect the image back to the viewer. [ad#250x250-sq]

As time passed, people improvised on the reflector and refractor techniques and came up with the compound telescope, a hybrid of the two magnifying techniques. One advantage of the compound astronomy telescopes is increased effective focal length and portability. Most compound telescopes can just be folded and packed into a case.

Through the years, scientists have improved on the designs and techniques of astronomy telescopes to come up with unconventional yet equally powerful scopes that they use in their research. These unconventional telescopes deviate from the fundamental mirror-and-lens approach to magnify heavenly bodies.

For example, the Arecibo Observatory does not use lenses in its telescopes. Instead, it makes use of radio waves. The telescope gathers radio waves through a parabolic dish that has holes in it. Other examples of an unconventional astronomy telescopes include the Chandra X-Ray Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The former uses X-rays in their telescopes while the latter sees heavenly bodies by using infrared radiation.
[ad#468x60]
Astronomy’s history would never be complete without the astronomy telescopes. The Astronomy telescopes have played a very important role in the foundation of this branch of science, and that degree of importance remains until today.

A lot of people are interested in astronomy. Most of these are children who simply are fascinated with the stars. In order to sustain their interest and hobbies, where can these astronomy enthusiasts go to get the necessary equipment? The answer is the astronomy store.

The sad part is that there are not much of these stores anywhere. People would think that it’s kind of hard to find their necessary hardware for pursuing their astronomy needs, but it’s a misconception. Although there is hardly a chance that there is an astronomy store around the corner, it still is easy to buy your needed astronomy gear.

A much easier way to buy your gear is to visit any online astronomy store in the Internet. Most e-commerce stores like eBay and Amazon would have astronomy-related equipment for sale. You have to be careful to check the seller’s reputation though, because you might end up ripped off: a major disadvantage of the privacy afforded by the Internet.

In any case that there’s an astronomy store in your area, be sure to check it out. Astronomy stores are specialized shops which mean they supply only high-quality products from authorized distributors. An astronomy store should be the only store you check out for your astronomy supplies. The products they sell there are sure to be used for astronomy, like telescopes for example.

What can you find in an astronomy store?

Telescope

Considered the lifeline of any astronomer, telescopes are the most common gear that one can buy from an astronomy store. There are many kinds of telescopes out in the market for astronomy alone. For example, there is a specific telescope for looking at the storms on the surface of the sun. Other telescopes won’t be able to see that if they are not specially created.

Telescopes that enable you to look at the moon’s surface can also be found in an astronomy store. You can view the Moon using simple Telescopes or binoculars. However, these special kinds of telescopes have enough power to enable you to have a look up close at the many craters and crags that the Moon’s surface has.

Of course, high-powered telescopes that have the necessary magnification power to view the many stars in detail can be bought at any authorized astronomy store.

Astronomy Videos

For the sake of promoting interest in astronomy, several reputable astronomers have published special videos that touch on topics that relate to the subject. There have been videos discussing supernovas, black holes, the constellations, specific stars and many other topics that are under the[ad#250x250-sq] umbrella of astronomy. These videos can be found and bought at any authorized astronomy store. These videos help widen your knowledge as each one of them focuses on a specific topic, so make sure to drop by often and grab one of these videos.

Star Maps

Star maps are also available in any astronomy store. These maps help you to locate and pinpoint specific stars in the sky. These maps are helpful for discussing and educating children about the stars outside your house, rather than letting them rely on videos and books.

There are many kinds of star maps available in the astronomy store. One of these is the sky map. These maps are specific plotting of the many stars viewable in any given time and in any given location. Hence, a person who lives in Los Angeles needs to buy the sky maps for the skies of Los Angeles, or else, the maps would be unusable. There are separate maps for each month since stars change their locations due to the Earth’s revolution.

Another important item to have when you’re into Astronomy, especially when you’ve just started your hobby, is the star guide. Star guides are published literature that serves as your crash course into astronomy. They contain extensive information about the many different stars and constellations in the sky. Grab a copy of these when you buy your first telescope in the astronomy store in your area.
[ad#468x60]
Other products sold in an astronomy store include accessories like reflectors and refractors. Special, high-resolution cameras intended to take pictures of stars (otherwise difficult to capture using conventional cameras) are also sold in the astronomy store.

A lot of people seem to have limited thinking when it comes to astronomy activities. They believe that when you take a look at the stars at nighttime, you’re already doing astronomy. Moreover, when you pay attention to the comets and meteors, you’re making yourself involved in advanced astronomy activities. However, just as the universe is vast, there are also plenty of things that you can do together with the heavenly bodies.[ad#250x250-sq]

Different Astronomy Activities

So what are the various astronomy activities that you can do? To give you some pretty excellent ideas, refer to the list below:

1. Observe the sun. Nothing is more mystical—and, more often than not, powerful—heavenly body than the sun. Even our forefathers believe that they are the source of life. Astronomy activities that include it will be observing solar eclipses. This is the time when the moon passes by between the earth and the sun. Nevertheless, it would be mystical to watch it with the use of Telescopes such as the digital ones. As any type of Astronomy activities, though, you should be taking some extra precaution. Knowing how the sun can damage your eyes, don’t forget to wear glare filters.

2. Watch the changing phases of the moon. Doing a number of astronomy activities with the moon will inform you that the moon doesn’t really take different shapes. They come into phases as the amount of reflection from the sun varies t certain points in time. If you have powerful equipment with you, you can also see the different craters and the “rivers” of the moon.

3. Discover new galaxies and solar systems. There are other galaxies in the universe, and there are already several astronomy activities performed to prove that. You can also be one of them too, though you definitely need an ultra-powerful telescope, which doesn’t cost very cheap. But if you’re really into it, then it’s definitely going to be worth your money.

4. Identify the birth of a new star. Stars come and go, and these two significant phases are definitely worth watching. Your astronomy activities may include seeking new and dying stars in the galaxy. You would know that by the colors that they emit. It could be best if you can keep a log on their developments, so you can share it to other astronomers all over the world.
[ad#468x60]
You can also include in your astronomy activities other planets, such as Venus, Mars, and Saturn. Venus appears so bright in the early morning sky, while with Jupiter, you can watch out for storms and just be marveled by its rings. Mars is known to be similar to Earth, and it’s great to follow the different expeditions to such planet.

The stars are unbearably many. You can tell that when you look up at the sky. Yet, astronomers actually refer to each star by a name. The name may be proper, like Alpha Centauri, or it can be codes like C4H1 or the like. You might wonder how scientists can accurately pinpoint an individual star to name it, when they are as numerous as the ants that live below the earth.

That’s because astronomers have an astronomy map. These are maps in which they plot the locations of known stars so they would know where Alpha Centauri is placed. They use this data to make observations focusing on one or two specific stars. An astronomy map is very accurate, and is printed in monthly versions since stars change locations every month due to the revolution of the Earth around the sun.[ad#250x250-sq]
Different Kinds of Astronomy Maps

There are many kinds of astronomy maps that astronomers use in their work. The commonly used maps are called sky maps. These maps plot the positions of specific celestial bodies in any given time, and in any given location. For example, if you live in New York, there are maps that show the positions of the stars in a specific month as they would appear to the eyes of someone who lives in New York.

Star finders are another kind of astronomy map. Instead of just stars, these maps show the positions of constellations among the many others in the sky.

Advantages of an Astronomy Map

The first—and the most obvious—advantage is that an astronomy map serves as reference so people can easily locate a star. It is used not just by astronomers, but by seamen as well so they can locate the North Star in the Big Dipper. The North Star is used as a reference, so seamen can tell the direction they’re going.

Another advantage is that they are fairly easy to obtain. Most can be taken from astronomy magazines. Most magazines publish the astronomy map monthly, so readers can make use of it. And with the boom of the Internet age, anyone can freely download and print an astronomy map free of charge from the many websites who offer it. Three-dimensional and even four-dimensional maps can also be viewed through the Internet. All it takes is the perseverance to search and find these maps through the search engines.

Many people find Astronomy to be intimidating at first given the amount of equipment and supplies needed. Once diving into the hobby one may see the need to purchase an expensive telescope, along with the volume of less than clear data consisting of star charts and planetary charts along with numerous calculations, and the like. While very advanced astronomy does required extensive calculations and the crunching of numbers, one can enjoy Astronomy basics with very little investment. All that is required is the desire to learn and study the night sky and the rest will come with time.[ad#250x250-sq]In the beginning you will need to acquire a small number of items to get started. Using as little equipment as a pair of binoculars, a chair or blanket, a simple constellation map, and a book and writing instrument to take notes with.

Many beginning astronomers simply lie down on a comfortable blanket looking up at the skies above and gaze at their most favorite constellation. From there one may compare the different constellations or even keep a watchful eye out for a shooting star.

For some this is the extent of their Astronomy hobby but for those who catch the bug the sky is literally the limit on where you can go from there.

To become familiar with astronomy basics the Moon is the perfect training ground for beginning astronomers. One can check and track the phases of the moon, the changing color of during the change of the phases and more.

A quick internet search will provide a number of resources or you can pick up a book with the data provided. Take notes of what is observed during the phases. Lunar and solar eclipses can be a very rewarding experience.

Once you have mastered the moon you can move up to another celestial body. A celestial object like a planet or galaxy is a fitting next subject for your itinerary. By progressing throughout the galaxy slowly you will build up your knowledge base and broaden your galactic knowledge. The next step after this may be to buy a telescope. By taking this slow but steady approach, you add another something to the list until you wind up keeping an eye out for most of the major celestial figures, eventually buying a telescope for enhanced viewing.
An alternate approach to the hobby is to network amongst the community of Astronomers to learn different view points and broaden your general knowledge. Once you learn the basics and your skills increase, you’ll be able to mingle with your astronomy peers discuss ideas or brainstorm ideas.
