Contrary to other people’s beliefs, astronomy is not really for the loners or the geeks. In fact, there is one astronomy club in a city. Their goals may slightly differ from the others, but one thing is for sure: those who join an astronomy club get to share and absorb information that they can use for their respective studies. Besides, it feels good to belong and meet individuals who share the same passion as yours.[ad#250x250-sq]
How to Look for an Astronomy Club

Before you can actually join, you should look for an astronomy club first. In truth, there are countless. But if you don’t have any idea where they really are, perhaps the tips below will let you discover one:

1. Check out the Internet. Try opening search engines such as Google and Yahoo and search for an astronomy club. You will discover that there are a great number of them, and all you need to do is to take a look at each one that interests you. You can also narrow the search by adding your location, for example, “Astronomy clubs in Cincinnati.” This is when you want to meet other astronomers who could be living near your area. You would definitely want to have someone you can borrow a telescope from when yours get broken, right?

2. Participate in science exhibits. Usually, exhibits are being sponsored by a certain organization, or even a number of them. Read your daily newspaper or watch television, as the schedule for such events are advertised in these media. Make sure that you can at least talk to a representative of the astronomy club. A lot of them are cordial and accommodating and would definitely invite you to their meetings and other activities.

3. Visit planetariums. Museums and planetariums normally have association with a certain astronomy club, and you can inquire from their facilitator about it. If they don’t, you can just ask them if they know of one.

What to Do in an Astronomy Club

Once you already found the astronomy club, it’s time to test the waters. The basic thing to do is to participate in one meeting and observe. Though astronomy clubs are good, not every one of them will be up to your liking. Take note of your observations, their weaknesses and strengths, and see where you can have better opportunities to learn and contribute. Take note of the members too. Keep in mind that you will be soon working and talking together with these people. When you’re sure of your decision to join, ask the facilitator of your intention. Usually, an application form and perhaps a fee will be required of you.
Most importantly, participate in the activities. Since you’ve thought of joining an astronomy club, you might as well be a good member.
